CONCEPTUALIZE AND ORGANIZE IDEAS (SKETCHING IDEAS OUT)
In order to begin creating a surreal work that has deep meaning to you and presents a message to the viewer, a message with meaning, you will need to sketch out some rough examples of how you might approach your work. Parts and pieces may be dislocated or placed in unusual areas, make these decisions early. You may juxtapose or place objects together that may not make sense to the viewer right away, sketching out a rough plan WILL save you much frustration later on.
1-on-1 DISCUSSIONS/CONVERSATIONS ABOUT YOUR WORK
We will spend time 1-on-1 talking about how to blend together your ideas with the media you want to experiment with. I will show a number of group demonstrations in class about specific media (colored pencil, pen/ink, pencil, and other media) and I will also direct you to other outside resources that may specifically help you grow as a student artist.
In-Progress Evaluation
About half way through the development of your project we will pause for a short self-evaluation and an in-progress grade. This can really help you solidify in your mind that you are going in the right direction or may spur you to move in a different direction with your work. A gallery of all in-progress student work will be shown below.
PROJECT SPECIFIC CRITERIA
In order to complete this project: Each student will be given a black gel pen. Your initials will be taped onto it so I know it belongs to you. You MUST use black pen/ink at least in a part of your work, this will help you really think about and apply contrast to areas of your work as well as really think about the FULL composition (background and foreground). I will not accept your work as completed until your ink pen is empty so make sure to really work out your concept and ideas well. Make it meaningful; surrealism isn't always logical but it is all about meaning.
