ENTRY ACTIVITY: (3 min) A-Z ACTIVITY --> TOPIC: LANDSCAPE & TEXTURE
ENTRY EVENT: IMPASTO PAINTING (2-min) & SLIP-TRAILING CLAY (5 MIN)
DRIVING QUESTION: (1 min) How can I (WE) create an artwork connected with my interests that is also focused on the theme of landscape?
STUDENT PRACTICE: (20 min)
1--Each student has been provided a container of textural painting medium and a PALATE KNIFE to experiment with on a heavy cardboard surface. Pencil sketch a rough landscape on the cardboard and apply medium to areas you feel should be highly textured over top of your sketch.
2--EACh student has been provided a bag of clay slip and a slip trailing tool to experiment with on a small clay tile. With a pencil sketch a landscape onto the clay tile and add slip to areas that you feel should be textured.
Student voice & Choice: (15 min Brainstorm & Art Concept)
The options for students include:
1) Working individually. (smaller scale/more complexity)
2) Working collaboratively with others. (larger scale/less complexity)
3) Students will brainstorm, propose and, if approved, start an impasto textured landscape painting of a size 11x14 or larger. Students may use any mixed media materials (glue guns, leaves, bark, grass...), however, textured painting medium must be included. Paintings can be sketched out, have texture compound added, and then painted; students may also choose to mix paint with textural compound and paint with the compound itself. A palette knife must be used as one of your painting tools if you choose the painting option. Early finishers will be asked to increase refinement or complexity before moving on.
4) Students will brainstorm, propose and, if approved, start a textured clay project that is focused on landscape as the main element. This can be done on one large tile, many small tiles, on the surface of a vase/bowl, or other form as approved. Complexity of the project should take up about 2 weeks of class time. Texture and landscape must be the main focus and students must use slip trailing tools and techniques throughout the project in addition to others. The clay work must be highly skillfully refined for this point in the semester. Early finishers will be asked to increase refinement or complexity before moving on.
